I liked the idea and even the story... The main character, however, was very one-dimensional and only thought about Cade and her wanting to be with him the Entire. Series. She had all of the makings of being a strong female character, but as soon as she sees him 97% of her thoughts were that she was depressed he wasn't there, elated he was, him, him him. Non-stop. About 1% was thoughts about her family, 1% was washing her taking a shower/washing her face and brushing her teeth, and the last 1% she was thinking about the plot and moving it forward because everyone else was doing that for her. Her attitude about everything was disheartening. It was things like, "Oh! Cade is so hot and he gave me this bow so I must practice to impress him and not disappoint him though does he like me? Because I'm in love and what if he leaves me? I'll be so depressed... blah blah blah."
Instead of, "Hey, this hot guy gave me a bow and showed me how to use it because evil creatures are attacking me and my loved ones and I want to NOT die, so I better learn what the hell I'm doing."
All in all, I liked the originality of the story-line and I enjoyed the series because of that, but I won't read it again and I'm loathe to recommend it to someone and would direct them to other books, like Grave Mercy if they are interested in old gods.

Faelorehn Book One of the Otherworld Series eBook Jenna Elizabeth Johnson Reviews
Let me tell you a story and you tell me if you have heard it before
There once was an awkward girl who nobody understood. She was different from everyone else and she was ridiculed and ostracized for her differences. She goes through her whole life with only a few friends who accept that she is different but don't really know just how different she truly is. Then one day a mysterious good looking man walks into her life and says, yes you are different. You are different for this reason and you are very important with very important powers. I am here to help you with your important powers and protect you from the very evil people who want to hurt you (because don't forget you are important now) She falls in love with said good looking fellow because for the first time in her life she is not the only one who is different and her differences are not terrible and she doesn't disgust him. The end.
Does this ring a bell with anyone? It certainly did with me. This is a sorely overused plot in YA and although I admit I have read some fairly decent books who used it, Faelorehn just didn't make the cut. I was expecting so much more from a book that promised a dive into ancient Celtic culture with magic and intrigue. Instead I got a heroine who did lots of homework and fell in love with a man she once thought was a hobo. We would get tiny bits of action followed by a string of denials from our heroine, drips of information from her love interest, followed by chapters of her waiting for him to come back from the Otherworld. It was a dull read that lacked the rich culture I was expecting and was headed by a weak main character.
Meghan is as unremarkable as a character could be. She does her homework, is a good adoptive child, and hangs out with her friends. Her distinguishing features are her strange eyes, she has strange dreams and hears and sees strange things. Unfortunately I have read about many other characters who have those exact same distinguishing features making them not so remarkable at all. I was willing to get past this except for the fact that Meghan never had a presence in my head, never had a strong voice. I didn't care about her nor did I care about what happened to her. This was furthered when she fell in love with a man that she knew nothing about. He smiled at her a couple of times and dropped a life changing bomb on her. Oh and he has the same eyes as her. That's all Meghan knows yet she falls knee buckling in love with Cade. I had hoped that he would be a dynamic character that would add some interest to the story but he fell flat much like Meghan did.
Another critic I have is the lack of a strong antagonist. A few petty school bullies and a raven that makes minimal appearances don't count and neither do her random attackers. They did little for the story and were not the fleshed out villains I was hoping for to help drive the book's plot forward.
Overall this was a very disappointing read. Anything I heard about Celtic culture was material that I had heard before and the plot...well yall know how I feel about the plot. This is not a book I would recommend and I will not be picking up the sequel although I hope that the author grew and improved with book 2. *2 out of 5 stars.*
On a side note I would like to point out that the main character seemed to be aware of some foolish things she was doing and would comment about them in her head before going through with them anyway. Ex. After being attacked and saved by a stranger this happens "Or gnomes?" I offered, and then started in surprise. What was I doing? Taking part in this conversation as if it were normal to stand around on a Saturday morning and chat about imaginary creatures as if they were real. With a strange, albeit, good-looking guy. OR He only stood still as a statue, his dark green eyes studying me carefully. It should have creeped me out even more but it didn't./ This happens frequently enough throughout the book that I felt the need to comment.
I discovered Faelorehn during an online reader event and having never read any of Jenna Elizabeth Johnson's work before I didn't know what to expect. I figured it didn't hurt to give it a try, after all it was free on a sale at the time. I'm so grateful I participated because one never knows the treasures they'll find.
The story is told in first person, which always takes a bit for me to get into as we are taken into the story from one perspective and without the luxury of others' thoughts. This is no reflection on the story just my reading habits.
Right away we're taken into a dream or is it a memory of teenage Meghan Elam, a mysterious adventure that is just a piece in the puzzle of her life. She feels very different, always has, from the way her eyes change color to odd visions and the uncanny way she hears trees sometimes...
As her day starts we're introduced to her family, including her mom, dad, and five younger brothers...including her special connection with Aiden who has Autism. Then we meet her friends...who she kinda annoyingly analyzes a bit as she explains them...but that's teenagers. Once we arrived at school I found myself kinda relating to her friend Robin, as I never tolerated bullying of anyone, let alone myself or friends and was hoping Meghan would stand up for herself. Well she does, it does just take longer than it should.
Before long she starts encountering all sorts of startling things; not least of all an over-sized Raven with red eyes who seems to be watching her, freaky gnomes in the swamp, and a white wolfhound who lures her into the night. Cue Cumorrig and a really tall and immensely strong stranger and yikes, what on Earth is going on.
Cade MacRoich says he has some answers for her, but she's not sure she wants to ask those questions... once she does it seems there's no turning back nor away. Then again, with stray Faelah creeping into her neighborhood she couldn't avoid them nor this Otherworld Hunter anyway. Of course, he talks like he's from an age gone by and his smile would melt butter on a frozen winter day....what were we talking about....oh but he keeps disappearing and seems to be keeping secrets from her...maybe some deadly secrets.
I'm sorry, am I annoyingly just giving you faint hints at the story without actually explaining it to you....good because I highly recommend you read this series yourself and be prepared to get caught up in the adventure and follow Meghan into the Dolmarehn to find out what happens!
I did. I started out with the version... which I stayed up far too late and left many tasks undone to finish reading. Then I moved to the Audible audio book version (audio my preferred method) and acquired the rest of the stories available. I took a road maybe a little less traveled and read Faelorehn then Dolmarehn which are both told from Meghan's point of view (Books 1 & 2). Then I couldn't resist and read/listened to Ghalien then Ehriad (Books 4 & 5) which are told from Cade's point of view...some of the events from the first two books from his perspective plus new adventures. Then I read Luathara, which is actually Book 3.
Though, it seems to start off slow....according to some reviewers... or rather starts off intriguing, gets a bit slow and gives just glimpses into adventure before taking off... this is just first person storytelling...we get the events as they happen and many of the thoughts in between. I'm a McKinley reader so I love details and character development. Be forewarned, though it ends all too quickly it seems like just after we're getting to the good stuff....but don't worry you can snatch the sequel right away like I did.
I recommend all of these books. I own the and Audible versions of each and will be rereading/relistening to them again. This series will probably join my annual reread shelf of Tolkien, MacDonald, McKinley, Fenech, and more.
