I loved this beautiful story about a young man, previously secretary to Lady Jane Grey, who has to flee England after her beheading because of the unstable political situation. He goes to Venice with a doctor friend and a pompous English earl and meets three interesting women, each of whose roles are what they are because of the policies and rules that affect women particularly in Venice during the rule of the Doges. One woman is an artist's model and courtesan, one is a young gay nun placed in a cloister prison by her family, and one is a beautiful young Muslim woman. The young man has a different kind of relationship with each woman, meets artists of the time such as Tintoretto, and learns much about himself as he learns their secrets and how their lives are ruled by the times.

This book was both well written and historically accurate in its portrayal of Renaissance Venice. I particularly liked the three images of the women of Venice nuns, courtesans, and foreigners. In order to maintain the exclusivity of the Venetian upper classes, most daughters were imprisoned as nuns, albeit nuns with a greater amount of freedom than we usually think of nuns having. The other women of Venice were either courtesans, or "foreigners" to the Venetians, ie Moslems and Jews, who were tolerated in Venice as compared to other European cities but never considered part of Venetian society. The book also touched upon Renaissance painters and the studios they ran and the state of medieval medicine, both of which were described authentically. I highly recommend this book.
Gives the reader a feel for Venice in the 1500's concentrating on artists & doctors. It also gives insight to Edward Courtenay the last Plantagenet & his arrogance & eventual demise. Keep waiting for the story to pick up & get more exciting but it didn't happen.
