I'm not faulting the writing talent. I have no complaints about the plot or characters or readability. But I avoid cussing and bed-hopping. The Last of the Stanfields edition by Marc Levy Daniel Wasserman Romance eBooks Reviews
Marc Levy is an excellent storyteller. His most recent book, THE LAST OF THE STANFIELDS, is no exception. I love the way he braided three distinctly different strands of time together to create one captivating story. And it has a twist at the end. Trust me, you won't see it coming!
This is an absolutely fantastic book. I started it this morning, and couldn’t put it down until I finished it. The stories, the characters, everything is so well developed and intriguing. The translator also did a wonderful job. Seriously. Go read it. It’s that good.
I do not remember ever reviewing a book I had not finished, but this one was irredeemable.
Incredibly implausible premise, but the author is supposedly the most popular author in France, and it was free, so I picked it up and persisted through 50 pages because the writing style is so engaging. There is just too much suspension of disbelief to swallow. For example, in 1980 the book claims women in Baltimore were not allowed to be writers on papers, just researchers. I am sure that was not true. For example, I knew the woman who was the Baltimore Sunpaper restaurant critic in 1975, and there were women reporters on the paper as well. And one night a bunch of friends get together and decide to start their own paper, and one of them, who is an accountant for Procter and Gamble and not even in the industry, sits down and works up their business plan including staffing and pay that evening! See why it strains my little critical senses? So far the Maryland setting does not seem too true-to-life either, and I have lived here all my life.
I find the author's bio also rather implausible. Why would an author who lives in New York need a translator? And doesn't he sound like a bit too much of a polymath? I was prepared to find out the bio is also fiction, but I looked him up, and the part about his popularity is accurate! Mon dieu!
I enjoyed the storyline and premise, it definitely felt unique. But the characters all sound exactly like they are the same person. Male or female, young and old, in the past and present, they sound like a middle-age modern American woman. And when you are reading about a French Jewish man during WWII era, it really takes you out of the moment. I really hope that this is just poor translation rather than the fault of the author. The point-of-view switch at each chapter felt a little clunky, especially at the beginning. A lot of the humor, for example about the Trump 2016 campaign, felt heavy-handed; which resulted in more eye-rolling rather than giggles. I didn’t feel a connection between the protagonists or emotionally connected to the characters. Which was too bad, because the end twist fell flat rather than having a powerful impact it was meant to.
I see WHY the author is the most-read French author. The story spanned decades, but the characters were slowly revealed until the last twist.
The only kindle first book that seemed even remotely acceptable to my reading preferences in many months, and I had to stop reading it before I was even 25% through. It only took a few chapters for the author to degenerate into sexual scenarios. Not explicit or extended, but each time there was a little more detail included. I had to make a decision - keep reading, in hopes that it never got any worse, or keep reading, get really hooked on the story (which seemed interesting enough), and find that the author was so enthralled with including his sexual fantasies that it just became unreadable. Since I have never known an author to stop building on sexual scenarios once he got started, I chose to remove the book from my device. I am writing this review to warn others who might not appreciate lewdness in their reading material.
When the first of the month books come out, I always read the blurb for each one, whether I am interested in the book or not. With this one, I almost passed it up because of the characters named "Eleanor-Rigby" and "George-Harrison". Gimme a break! How good could this book be with character names like those? Fortunately for me, none of the other first reads intrigued me at all. Free book, might as well!
What a good book! I'm sure others have reviewed it beautifully, so I'm not going to rehash it. Suffice it to say, it was good enough that I will definitely be buying more from this author. Don't let the inane names put you off. While they don't add anything to the book, they are easy enough to ignore. Ignoring the book because of them would be sad!
