One of the wittiest American short novels ever put to paper. Reflects the love affair of the boys and girls next door with the emerging Hollywood silent movie industry. Get that correspondence-school acting diploma, board a choo-choo, leave your small town for sunny California, and your name will soon be in lights...at least Merton thought so. While the story is fiction, there is some grim reality here, desperation, homelessness, and hunger. And, at the same time, humor, recognition, reconciliation, and hope. A timeless story.Product details

Merton of the Movies Harry Leon Wilson 9781142230777 Books Reviews
I was pleased with this purchase. I needed this book for a class and ordered it at the last minute. I was glad that it shipped quickly.
Merton wants to be a star and thinks he's got the path to fame figured out. His experiences in Hollywood are entertaining. Good read!
Very funny book. Harry Leon Wilson had a remarkable understanding of the early film industry.
This story started out slow, and I must confess that half way through the first chapter I was all for sitting it aside. Lucky for me I didn't. What the author brought to me was a very entertaining tale of amusement, tragedy, and I would have to add romance. I hope you will enjoy this story as much as I did. Gary
This is an incredibly wonderful book! I have seen the play, but this book was such a delight. Try to picture Buster Keaton in the leading role. It was funny and I never expected a love story.
A pleasantly funny story, set in the era of silent films. Merton Gill was a sales clerk in a small town general store who wanted, oh so bad, to be a leading man. After all, he looked just like one of the biggest stars of the silver screen, and he had studied all the film magazines. He even finished a correspondence school in acting from a reputable sounding acting school in Arkansas. He could not get enough of Beulah, the intrepid yet winsome actress who did all her own stunts. He went all the way to Peoria to see her in person, and that's what she said. Merton's Walter Mitty daydreams make his boss tear out his hair. So Merton could not swim, or ride a horse, or dance, and he was not a heavy smoker or drinker. He believed in his dream and in suffering to make pictures better and finer, not like the junk comedies of cross-eyed men in baggy pants.
So, after saving $263.00, Merton took the train to Hollywood. And he suffered.
Did he become a movie heart-throb? That would be telling.
It's not great comedy, but mildly funny. A sort of P.G. Wodehouse type of plot. Boy meets Girl. Boy does not think much of Girl because he is in love with another girl. Boy falls flat on face.
